MINSK, Belarus — An explosion tore through a key subway station in the Belarusian capital of Minsk during evening rush hour Monday, killing seven people and wounding 50 others, officials said.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw heavily wounded people being carried out of the Oktyabrskaya subway station, including one person with missing legs.

Several witnesses told The Associated Press that the explosion hit just as passengers were stepping off a train about 6 p.m. (1500 GMT). The Oktyabrskaya station, where Minsk’s two subway lines intersect, was crowded with transferring passengers at the end of the work day.

The station is within 100 yards of the residence of authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko and the Palace of the Republic, a concert hall often used for government ceremonies.

There was no immediate indication of whether the blast was an accident or a terrorist attack.

Interior Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Borovskaya told Thee Associated Press that seven people were killed and 50 wounded.

One witness, Alexei Kiklevich, said at least part of the station’s ceiling collapsed after the explosion.

Igor Tumash, 52, said he was getting off a train when “there was a large flash, an explosion and heavy smoke. I fell on my knees and crawled … bodies were piled on each other.”

He said he saw a man with a severed leg and rushed to help him.

“But then I saw he was dead,” Tumash said, starting to cry.

Political tensions have been rising in Belarus since December, when a massive demonstration against a disputed presidential election sparked a harsh crackdown by police in which more than 700 people were arrested, including seven presidential candidates.

Lukashenko, who was declared the overwhelming winner of the disputed Dec. 19 election, has run Belarus, a former Soviet republic, with an iron fist since 1994. However, Belarus’ beleaguered opposition has been largely peaceful for years, with only a few clashes with police.

In July 2008, a bomb blast at a concert attended by Lukashenko injured about 50 people in Minsk. No arrests in the case were reported.

Former agent of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, a member of the government and current adviser to Israeli Prime Minister of Pensioner Affairs, Rafi Eitan, is visiting Belarus. Representatives of the Israeli Embassy have explained Telegraf that the former Israeli Minister of Belarus is on a private visit.

85-year-old Rafi Eitan and his wife, after landing in the airport headed to Rechitsa where his ancestors came from, reports the publication Kursor.co.il.

Rafi Eitan was born in 1926 in Israel, Kibbutz Ein-Herut. He served in Palmach, first worked in the General Security Service (Shin Bet), and then in the foreign intelligence (Mossad), where he headed the Operations Department.

Eitan’s career apex was the operation on kidnapping a Nazi war criminal from Argentina, Adolf Eichmann, who later was executed in Israel.

He resigned and took up business in 1972 and in 1978 at the invitation of Ariel Sharon returned to public service and was appointed to the post of Adviser to the Prime Minister on counter-terrorism, and then chief of intelligence, “Lekem,” providing security of protected objects.

Rafi Eitan is banned to enter the U.S. territory since he was implicated in the recruitment of an Israeli agent in the U.S. Navy. It is known that a former minister maintains good business relations with the Cuban leadership.

Suppressing free and open discussion on any subject is as bad as telling lies, and knowingly suppressing the truth is the biggest lie of all, because it is based, not on a mistake or a genuine error, but on a deliberate intention to deceive.

Having been tortured, Rudolf Höss, who was the commander of Auschwitz from 1940 to 1943, almost certainly lied to save the lives of his wife and children. Even if torture and duress cannot not be proven, the overwhelming reason for recognizing the utter falsity of the Höss confession is that the gassing method he described was not scientifically plausible.

Yet Höss’s conviction has stood, by inference, as a testament to the cruelty of Germans in general, since he was tried at Nuremberg, in 1947, and subsequently hanged on April 16th, 1947, in Poland.
